back from the frozen north

Actually, it wasn't so frozen. For some reason, probably global warming, the January temperature on the shore of Lake Superior was in the 40s. Amazing! I think this is very distressing. One more thing to blame on the current administration.

My son and I went to A Prairie Home Companion too. I am reminded about how much I like In My Life and Brokedown Palace. Both were performed beautifully on the show. A really fun evening.

the phone drama continues

The problem with the phone being connected to our front door is that we use the phone keypad to open the door. So even if the person calls on another phone we still have to go down 4 floors to open the door for them. Also, they would need to know our other phone number, which is fine for friends but a definite problem for delivery people.
Our 'cableguy' manager used his equipment to test our phone. It's the line coming into the building and not something within our house. This is a GOOD thing because I will be out of town (in Wisconsin) on the up-coming repair day. Now I think I will put a note on our intercom button telling the phone guy (I expect a "guy" too!) to check only the outside line. I'd better because he might go away without doing anything if I am not here. Very annoying! Bill said that the reason they made me wait so long for the repair guy is because it is cheaper for Verizon to give customers a credit for lost service than it is to pay overtime for someone to come out promptly. I hate the corporate mentality!

I went hiking in Altadena yesterday. The weather was amazing. 85 degrees on Jan 6! The trail had repeated views of downtown LA. Really nice! I was reminded of how much I love the nearby mountains. The piney smell, the quiet so near to the city. A couple miles up the hill and back. It is good for the soul!

phone groan

A most annoying turn of events. Some time in the last few days our phone line went down.
There is no dial tone. Dead! It's a good thing I have a cell phone. To further aggravate the problem, the phone is attached to the intercom of our building, which means that anyone coming to our door cannot contact us. I called Verizon repair. They told me that the first repair appointment available is Jan 12. It occurs to me that I should deduct 1/30 from my bill for each day of loss of service. I will call the business office tomorrow to notify them.

Wet Roses

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! (a day late)
We saw Match Point and toasted the new year while watching the fireworks in the fog. The effect of the fog was to make the fireworks look something like an impressionist painting. Just a bit fuzzed out.

The Rose parade is happening and it is pouring! The surf is huge, Trader Joe's has a pirate ship float. We have a gigantic berm on our beach to block the anticipated high tide from washing away our houses.
I thought the attendance at the parade would be much lower because of the weather but that doesn't seem to be the case.
